What Can I Do On My Mining Claim?
We work closely with the Bureau of Land Management; they are the authority for mining claim rules and regulations. This a quick look over the regulations explaining what is allowed on a mining claim while on a payment plan, without filing any notices or applications:

Casual Use means activities ordinarily resulting in no or negligible disturbance of the public lands or resources. Casual Use operations involve simple prospecting with hand tools such as picks, shovels, metal detectors and camping for less than 14 days in a 90-day period. Camping must be in compliance with all camping regulations and you must not occupy the public lands for more than 14 days in any 90-day period within a radius of 25 miles of your initially occupied site.
Small scale mining devices such as dry washers having engines with less than 10 brake-horsepower are allowed, provided they are fed using only hand tools. Operators conducting operations at the Casual Use level are not required to provide notice or post a financial guarantee for their operations. Casual Use does not include use of mechanized earth moving equipment, truck mounted drilling equipment, motorized vehicles in areas closed to off road vehicles, explosives, chemicals, or use and occupancy as defined by 43 CFR 3715

Once a claim is in Your Name, you can file the appropriate Notice or Plan of Operation and post the required financial guarantee or refundable bond that allows additional mining activities.

Notice of Operations include only exploration activities in which five or less acres of disturbance are proposed.

Plan of Operations include all mining and processing activities (regardless of proposed disturbance), plus all other activities exceeding five acres of proposed public land disturbance. A Plan of Operations is also needed for any bulk sampling in which 1,000 tons or more of presumed ore for testing is proposed for removal.
