The Heavy Metal claims are situated within a trend of highly mineralized schist that hosts numerous hi-grade gold and base metal rich mines.  The mineralized schist hosts VMS (volcanogenic massive sulfide) deposits, generally rich in copper, gold, lead, zinc and silver. Numerous quartz veins are found cutting the schist, some are gold rich.

The largest mine in this trend is the huge open pit and underground operation once operated by Phelps Dodge Corporation. It is located on the north end of the trend, near the town of Jerome.  Recent mining exploration in this trend include:

Arizona Metals Corp. - completed the 3rd phase of drilling at the Kay Mine located at the south end of the trend in Black Canyon City.  Approximately 12 miles south of the Heavy Metal claim group.

King Global Venture – recently announced approval of permits for drilling on their flagship Silver Cord property near Cleator.  Approximately 1.5 mile NW of the Heavy Metal claim group.

Highly Mineralized Precambrian Yavapai Schist is the host rock for most of the lode and placer gold.  Chert and banded iron formation are useful marker horizons.  Yavapai schist once was ocean floor, has been lifted and now the bedded well foliated schist is almost vertical. Black smokers deposited the metal rich material.  Over time, layers of this metal rich material was eventually covered and then uplifted to where they are exposed today.

Prospecting activities have identified multiple mineralized horizons, much like a layer cake standing on end.  These layers can be traced for miles by quartz, chert and banded iron formations, even in areas where the ore itself is not exposed but concealed by thin alluvial cover.  The lode gold is found in limonite stained, vuggy quartz veins and stringers that traverse the schist.  Placer gold in the form of fines, flakes and small nuggets are found on the claims in desert washes, gulches and the slopes below the gold vein outcrops.

The long belt of highly mineralized schist traverses the valley in a north-south direction from Jerome to Rock Springs.  Both east and west of the belt of schist a course-grained granite intrudes.  This granite forms most of the rugged Bradshaws and is gold bearing.

Gold-rich placer mineralization occurs in the ragged schist outcrops.  Gold is also found in cracks, fractures, crevices and in the shallow alluvial cover.  Placer gold can be found in many of the washes and gulches.  Quartz veins in the schist are generally rusty from iron staining and usually vuggy.  Small outcrops of altered granite, mafic, and felsic dikes cut the basement schist.  Our testing recovered gold in both the schist and the altered granite.
