Our testing recovered placer gold in the main wash. Fines and flakes in cracks and crevices and at bedrock. Narrow gold bearing quartz veins and stringers cut the Pinal Schist host rock, and in places the veins are very rich in gold, some silver and copper. A great place to hunt for specimen rocks and other gemstones as agate and ruby red garnets are often found in this geological environment.
About a mile to the west a prominent butte rises steeply and at the base I saw Jesuit or Peralta treasure symbols scribed into the volcanic rock. Is this the area of the Lost Dutchman?
I have spent several years hunting for that lost mine and obviously have not found it yet. Maybe you will have better luck if you have the passion for treasure hunting.
This beautiful lode claim is located about 50 miles east of Phoenix and about 7 miles northwest of the old mining town of Superior. Superior is a full-service town with a population of about 3000.
The Superstition Gold #3 is a 20.66 acre unpatented lode claim situated in Millsite Canyon with high clearance 2wd access on the extreme eastern edge. Quail Spring, one of the major springs in the canyon is about 1.2 miles upstream (west) of the claim. Quail Spring and several other springs further upstream or in the side canyons will provide you with camp water via gravity flow using 1 inch PVC. Big Horn Sheep, javelina, white tail and mule deer are often seen, especially near water sources.
So if you want a change from the city rat race and are interested in prospecting for gold or just rockhounding, this is the place.
Please do not attempt to take a large RV or travel trailer to the claim without checking the road first as some of our monsoon storms tend to raise havoc the last mile or so.
